Tension Flares as Portable Gets Three-Month Jail Sentence with ₦30,000 Fine Option

Popular Nigerian street-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola—better known as Portable—has found himself at the center of fresh controversy after being sentenced to three months behind bars. However, the sentence comes with a ₦30,000 fine alternative.
The ruling was delivered by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo in Ogun State, following Portable’s conviction on two counts linked to assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
The legal saga dates back to April 2023, when the singer was arraigned before the Ifo Magistrates’ Court under charge sheet No. MIF/192C/2023. The charges included assault and the alleged theft of musical equipment. He was initially granted bail set at ₦300,000, with two family members standing in as sureties.
Despite multiple adjournments, Portable reportedly missed several court dates, prompting the court to remand him during his most recent appearance on Thursday.
According to Inspector Olumide Awoleke, the police prosecutor, the altercation took place on November 18, 2022, around 11:00 a.m. in Okeosa, Ilogbo, under the jurisdiction of the Ifo Magisterial District.
Magistrate Ilo found Portable guilty on counts one and two—sentencing him to one month in prison or a ₦10,000 fine for the first, and two months or a ₦20,000 fine for the second.
News of the sentence has stirred online reactions, though Portable’s management has yet to issue an official statement.
This isn’t Portable’s only brush with legal issues. He’s also entangled in a ₦2 million bail case involving the Ogun State government and is currently facing a defamation suit filed by Fuji legend, Saheed Osupa.
