Portable Faces Backlash Over Remarks on Buhari’s Death

Controversial Nigerian street-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has come under fire for comments he made following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari reportedly died in London after a prolonged illness, and in a video circulating on social media, Portable reacted by strongly criticizing the former leader’s legacy, particularly regarding the events of October 20, 2020, at the Lekki Toll Gate, where security forces allegedly opened fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters.

    In the video, Portable stated:

“The man that gave the order to shoot our people at Lekki Toll Gate is dead. Let’s live right. May he die again in Heaven. He gave the order, not Tinubu. He died in London.”

The artist accompanied the video with a caption reading:

    “Do good because of tomorrow…..”

The comments, which many have described as inflammatory and disrespectful, have drawn sharp criticism across social media platforms.

While some supporters defended Portable’s right to free speech and pointed to his reference to the Lekki shooting, others condemned the tone of his message as inappropriate and insensitive.

Known for his unfiltered commentary and erratic behavior, Portable has built a reputation for controversial public statements. In this latest instance, he used the moment to advise Nigerians to reflect on their actions, emphasizing that one’s legacy continues after death.

The Lekki Toll Gate shooting remains one of the most painful and contested moments in Nigeria’s modern political history.

Despite multiple investigations and public outcry, many Nigerians still seek transparency and accountability for the alleged use of live ammunition against unarmed civilians.

As reactions continue to pour in, Portable’s remarks once again highlight the deep emotional and political divisions surrounding the #EndSARS protests and their aftermath.
