Portable sparks outrage with comments opposing planned nationwide protest
Controversial Nigerian artist Portable has faced backlash after voicing his opposition to the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1–10, 2024.
The protest, organized in response to the rising cost of living under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has garnered significant support from many Nigerians struggling with economic challenges.
In an Instagram post, Portable labeled the protest as unnecessary and referred to participants as “jobless.” He warned against being asked to perform during the protest and suggested that those urging him to join should take up the cause themselves.
Portable went further to attribute the planned protest to laziness, implying that participants are not serious about their jobs. He stated, “Fight for yourself, not for Nigeria. Nigeria is okay, you are the one who is not okay.”
Portable’s comments have sparked widespread outrage, with many criticizing his insensitive and dismissive stance on the economic struggles faced by Nigerians.
His remarks have further fueled the controversy surrounding his outspoken nature and have led to a heated debate on social media.
Critics argue that Portable’s comments are out of touch with the realities faced by many Nigerians who are struggling to make ends meet due to the rising cost of living.
The backlash highlights the deepening divide between the experiences of average Nigerians and those in positions of influence who may be perceived as disconnected from the daily struggles of the populace.
“Fight for yourself, don’t fight or protest for Nigeria. If they petition you and send you to jail, it’s your loss.”
