Pep Guardiola’s cryptic explanation of Walker & Haaland bust-up.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola chose not to delve into the specifics of a post-match altercation involving Kyle Walker, Erling Haaland, and a member of Arsenal’s coaching staff.
In the match, Arsenal secured a victory, marking their first league win against the reigning champions in the fixture since 2015.
City midfielder Mateo Kovacic avoided a red card despite controversial late tackles on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice. While City had the better chances overall, tensions flared as Gabriel Martinelli secured the win for Arsenal in the 86th minute.
As the players were heading for the tunnel at full-time, Kyle Walker confronted Arsenal set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, who had previously been on Guardiola’s City staff, alongside Erling Haaland. Other players from both sides stepped in to separate them, with Jover pulled away by Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, who was sidelined due to injury.
Guardiola, when asked about the incident, responded, “I know what happened but I won’t say anything. [Arsenal] know it [too].” While not providing details, Guardiola appeared to suggest that Arsenal was at fault.
This victory propelled Arsenal level on points with Tottenham at the top of the Premier League table, with Tottenham holding a slight edge based on goal difference. Manchester City is two points behind in third place.
Remarkably, this marks the first time Guardiola’s team has suffered back-to-back league defeats since December 2018 when they were unexpectedly beaten by Crystal Palace and Leicester in quick succession around Christmas.
