Following Manchester United’s victory over Everton, Paul Scholes reacts to Antony’s celebration.
Manchester United, Former player Paul Scholes has reacted to Antony’s celebration after Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Everton.
After Antony, Manchester United’s £85 million acquisition, scored in the 2-1 victory over Everton on Sunday, Paul Scholes might want to reconsider his opinion of the player.
Last week, Scholes described Antony as a ‘one-trick pony’ following the Brazilian’s subdued display in United’s 3-2 victory over Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League. He said:
‘Sancho never really runs in behind, ‘He needs a fast left-back really or a centre-forward to link up with and he hasn’t really got that at the moment.
‘Antony on the other side as well, he doesn’t run in behind. He seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony. He’s always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. You’re thinking he needs to develop a little bit. It’s still early days for him, we know that.’
But after scoring United’s equaliser against Everton, Antony appeared to send a message to Scholes and his critics by putting his finger up towards his mouth.

After being sent a picture of Antony’s celebration on Instagram, Scholes then shared it to his followers along with the caption: ‘whoops!’
Speaking after United’s win at Goodison Park, Erik ten Hag described Antony’s performance as the best since he arrived from Ajax.
‘I was quite [confident] that he could straight away have an impact, and in the first games he has had his good moments, he had his bad moments, but I think today he played his best game so far,’ said Ten Hag.
“Now you see his running behind, and that is what I expect from him. Now I see his pressing, his defending is much better than in the first games and he has his dribbles, so I am happy with his performance, I am happy with his development.
“But I know there is still huge improvement and I know in the club and also in the Premier League that he needs to challenge. So he has to go every day to get out the best of him.”
