I spent ₦12M and made nothing: Paul O reacts to Sypro’s mismanagement claim
Nigerian businessman and socialite Paul O has addressed claims by singer Spyro about his unpleasant experience while signed to Okoye’s One Africa Music Fest label.
In a recent interview, Spyro recounted spending two years under the label, during which he said he made little to no career progress. He explained that he joined the label with high hopes, believing it had the resources to elevate his career.
“I signed to the label because I believed the label had the resources to push my career to the next level,” Spyro said. However, his expectations were unmet, and he described his time with the label as emotionally taxing. “I was always in tears and crying,” the singer revealed.
Spyro also accused the label of failing to invest in promoting his song “Funke,” which featured Afrobeats stars Davido and Mayorkun. He claimed that he and his business partner had to take out loans to fund the promotion of the single.
Reflecting on his experience, Spyro stated, “I think he [Paul O] understands the showbiz business more than he does the music business.”
Reacting to the allegations, Paul Okoye disclosed that he invested ₦12 million in Spyro’s career without earning any returns. In a post on his Instagram story, Paul shared evidence of payments made in 2017 for Spyro’s career, including expenses for trips to Dubai and the United Kingdom.
The show promoter admitted he didn’t recoup his investment but expressed no bitterness. “I didn’t make any return on my investment, but I’m happy for Spyro’s success,” Paul O stated.
In response, Spyro acknowledged Paul O’s financial contributions but insisted on the accuracy of his account. The singer shared that during a label-sponsored trip to the UK, he was forced out of his hotel after the label only paid for one night.
“I saw hell in the hands of the label staff,” Spyro wrote in his Instagram story, accusing them of treating him poorly despite Paul O’s efforts to intervene.
Despite his grievances, Spyro expressed gratitude and respect for Paul O, acknowledging his role in helping him enter the music industry. “I still have respect and love for Paul O. Thank you for putting me on,” the singer said.
