Legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu has passed away.
Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu reportedly passed away at 72. According to The Vanguard, the legendary performer died Tuesday night after collapsing during a performance at a birthday celebration on Banana Island, Lagos.
Onwenu, a celebrated icon in Nigerian music and film, was rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island where she was later pronounced dead, as reported by The Guardian. Her family has yet to release an official statement confirming the news.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s with the release of her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She gained widespread acclaim with her hit song “One Love” and continued to release numerous successful albums and singles throughout her career.
In addition to her musical achievements, Onwenu was also a talented actress, starring in several Nollywood films and earning numerous awards for her contributions to the entertainment industry. She was a trailblazer in Nigerian music and film, known for her powerful voice and compelling performances.

Onwenu’s influence extended beyond the arts, as she was actively involved in politics. She served as the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture Chairperson and the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. In 2011, she was honoured with the National Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), recognizing her as one of Nigeria’s most influential women.
Onyeka Onwenu’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian entertainment, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence and cultural impact.
