Port-Harcourt-born singer Omah Lay started from the bottom and as it is his rise to the top isn’t far.
With the just concluded 14th Headies Award, Omah Lay won the Next Rated Artiste, but the question is, what comes next?
As of last year, Omah Lay entered into stardom with his ground-breaking “Bad Influence“.
Though, he took Nigerians and the industry by surprise, but who decides when your glory shines?
After Bad Influence, he released a couple of other songs and two Eps that have made him remain on the headlines.
However, it is safe to say staying relevant in the industry requires more hard work, especially when your works are being recognized with awards.
Also, the game becomes tougher, the competitions become tighter, and more is expected of you.

Let’s take a look at the Next Rated Headies category and the artistes that were in competition for the crown.
NEXT RATED
- TEMS
- OMAH LAY – WINNER
- OXLADE
- BELLA SHMURDA
For the first nominee Tems, her works cannot be pushed aside with the hit track she has with Wizkid “Essence” and her hit song Damages.
Oxlade on the other hand released Away, Oxygene, and the likes, which are also hit, and are still dominating streams.
Lastly, Bella Shmurda is also a worthy opponent with Vision 2020, the remix, and so on.
So you see, Omah Lay being nominated amongst these three and topping is a huge success and well deserved.
As stated earlier, what next?
Here’s what’s next!
The industry is large, and as such looks up to you and expects more in return for the award given.
A good attribution will be that of Sean Tizzle and Burna Boy for the competition of Next Rated in 2013.
While Sean Tizzle secured a win over Burna Boy and others, he relaxed, and everyone knows where his music career is today.
On the other hand, Burna took the bull by the horn, now he is a Grammy-nominated artiste.
Another attribution will be that of 2019’s Next Rated Headies award ceremony list.
It was a compilation of Rema, Fireboy DML, Joeboy, Lyta, Victor AD, and Zlatan.
Well, we all witnessed Mavin act Rema claim the award home, but there’s a turnaround this year.
While Fireboy DML got nine nominations and five outstanding awards, Rema was nowhere to be found.
The point we are driving at is, Omah Lay should not relax and if he does, the outcome is not far from what we know.
Every day new artistes emerge and the continuously evolving music industry is dynamic enough to fall in favour of any artiste.
He can prove a point by winning the Next Rated this year and turning the odds in his favour the following year.
He has built a unique act widely accepted by everyone, and it is not likely to fade anytime soon.
More importantly, he should have in mind, his counterparts are not sleeping and people are also monitoring them.
There’s more work for Omah Lay now more than ever!
