In a recent interview, Olamide opened up on his motivation behind signing Fireboy DML to his label.
In an interview published on Tuesday, July 28th, 2021, Olamide and his protege, Fireboy DML spoke with OkayAfrica’s Nadia Neophytou during which they spoke about their bond and success so far.
When was also asked why he not only decided to sign Fireboy DML but made him his mentor instead, Olamide told OkayAfrica that there aren’t many young artists nowadays that can rival Fireboy DML’s style of music.
The YBNL boss also revealed that he had suspended signing artists until he met his current protege, Afropop superstar Fireboy DML.
In his words;
It’s the sound. Still today, for me, it’s still the same. There are so many young artists out there but they’re nothing compared to the kind of music Fireboy makes.
It’s just way beyond his age. I think Fireboy is 57 years old [Fireboy laughs out loud]. He writes like an old man. He’s one of those few people that I learn from sometimes. Like, ‘what does this dude think about when he’s writing?’

Olamide was a man of few words, according to Fireboy DML, who recalls meeting him for the first time. He also disclosed that they began recording on the day they first met. When asked if he remembered the first time he met the YBNL Founder, Fireboy replied,
“I remember. Because that was a big moment for me. I met him for the first time in person at a hotel in Lekki. We exchanged a few words — he’s a man of few words. But I think we started recording that same day, working on the album.”
