Renowned musician Seun Kuti has made waves once more, this time addressing cyberbullying and spotlighting the issue of disrespect towards African women in the music industry.

In a candid online clip broadcast on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the Grammy-nominated artist recounted a previous instance in which he renamed teammate Wizkid’s fans from Wizkid FC to “Buhari’s children” due to cyberbullying concerns. Seun Kuti stressed the gravity of cyberbullying and cyberstalking, denouncing such behaviors as making life threats and posting people’s personal information online.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Seun Kuti described experiencing controversy for claiming that only a few Nigerian artists, including himself at the time, had garnered Grammy nominations. When asked about Wizkid’s candidacy, he explained that only one of Wizkid’s videos was nominated, not the entire album. This created a heated online debate among followers, prompting Seun Kuti to change the name of Wizkid’s fanbase to preserve his own reputation.

Despite the internet drama, Seun Kuti remarked that he never felt compelled to involve the authorities, demonstrating the fortitude required to negotiate such situations in the digital era.

In addition to cyberbullying, The Big Bird addressed the issue of contempt for African women in the music industry. He expressed worry that African musicians frequently use derogatory stereotypes about African women in their lyrics, adding to a culture of disdain. Seun Kuti emphasized the importance of raising awareness and sensitivity about the portrayal of African women in music, advocating for a change toward more positive and empowering representations.

As Seun Kuti continues to use his position to push for social change and awareness, his outspokenness about cyberbullying and the image of African women emphasizes the significance of tackling these issues in the music business and beyond.
