Niniola Explains Her Decision to Stay Independent in the Music Industry
Award-winning Nigerian Afro-house singer Niniola has shed light on her decision to remain an independent artist despite numerous offers from record labels. In a recent interview with TVC, the ‘Maradona‘ crooner emphasized the importance of creative freedom and her understanding of the business side of music as key factors in her choice.
“I have been an independent artist for 10 years,” she revealed. “There are pros and cons to signing with a record label. I’ve seen the business side of doing music, which many people don’t see—they’re just focused on making music.”
Niniola highlighted that independence allows her to maintain control over her artistry, stating, “Being an independent artist allows me to do what I want. I’m in charge of my creativity.”
She also reflected on her early career, noting that she turned down offers to sign with record labels after her debut single because she didn’t want her unique Afro-house style to be compromised.
“At that time, nobody was doing Afro-house. They [labels] can dictate what you do because they are the ones financing you. For me, creative freedom is one of the major pros of being an indie artist,” she explained.
In addition to discussing her music career, Niniola shared that while she is naturally introverted, music brings out the extroverted side of her personality.
Her steadfast commitment to independence and her distinctive Afro-house sound have earned her widespread recognition and respect in the Nigerian music industry.
