These are the Nigerian Artists that have won the BET awards
BET which acronym for Black Entertainment Television is an American cable television channel targeting African American audiences, and here are the Nigerian Artists that have won the BET awards.
As a kid, I remember being so hyped about award shows, especially international award shows. The ambience, the magnificence. I find it all so captivating.
There’s a certain category specifically created to celebrate international artists from Africa. It’s the Best International Act: Africa.
It is important to note that quite a number of Nigerian artists have won the award and are still looking to do so. Just recently, artists such as Burna Boy, Teni, and Mr Eazi were nominated for the upcoming BET Awards 2019.
Although there have been several complaints about African artists not getting the proper recognition they deserve, the award show has improved significantly in the reception of African acts, especially now that Afrobeats is on a swift rise.
Here is a list of Nigerian artists that have won the BET Awards.
2baba & D’banj
The BET Awards created the Best International Act: Africa in 2011 and it was set up to accommodate two winners who are to be celebrated together.
Two acts from Nigeria 2baba and D’banj were selected as winners. They were easily some of the hottest musicians on the continent at that time, dropping back to back hits and touring all over.
Burna Boy
Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, rose to prominence in 2012 after his single “Like to Party”.
Burna Boy has two (3) BET awards and two (3) nominations
Wizkid
The first time Wizkid won a BET was in 2012. He picked up the award alongside Sarkodie who was unarguably the hottest Ghanaian musician at the time.
Wizkid also won the award again as a solo act in 2017.
Wizkid has three (3) BET awards, with a total of four (4) nominations
Ice Prince
Ice Prince was the first African artist to win the BET Award as a solo act.
It was (and remains) a memorable moment for Africa. Signed to Chocolate City, the rapper was on top of his game.
Davido
2014 was a great year for Davido as he won his first BET Award.
However, he set a record when he won the award again in 2018 as the first African act to collect the award on stage at the BET Awards.
Other artists who have gotten nominations include Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Mr Eazi, Tekno.
