Newcastle midfielder, Guimaraes discloses why he ‘hates’ playing against Manchester City
Bruno Guimaraes, the talented player from Newcastle United, has openly expressed his distaste for facing Manchester City, stating that it feels like playing against them is akin to being children.
Manchester City had an extraordinary season in 2022-23, securing a treble by clinching the Premier League title, winning the FA Cup against Manchester United, and triumphing over Inter in the Champions League final.
While Newcastle managed to hold the champions to a 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park, they were convincingly defeated 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium during the reverse Premier League fixture. The magnitude of City’s dominance left Guimaraes feeling overwhelmed and drawing a comparison between facing them and a scenario where children compete against seasoned professionals.
“We know that Manchester City is a step above all teams in England, with all due respect. It’s the worst game when we play there, I hate it,” he said while speaking to the Charla podcast on YouTube. “It feels like we’re all children and they’re professionals. It’s horrible. It feels like they’re playing with 15 players, and we’re playing with seven. You look and say, ‘Wow, there are so many blue guys.’ It’s unbelievable. And they’re all crazy good. Sometimes we talk, the coach asks: ‘Press the right side, the left side…,’
“Against Manchester City, how do you play?! You go out there and let them score right away… It’s very difficult, there are so many good players.”
Manchester City’s remarkable achievement of winning the treble in the 2022-23 season makes them the first English team to accomplish this since Manchester United under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson in 1998-99. Leading City’s attacking charge was Erling Haaland, who broke records by scoring an impressive 36 goals in the league and a total of 52 goals across all competitions.
Bruno Guimaraes, after the break, will make his return to action in a pre-season friendly against Gateshead, while Manchester City is set to face Bayern Munich in Japan on July 26.
