I used to play for Arsenal – Naira Marley reveals.
In a recent interview on Cool FM Lagos, Naira Marley, the popular Nigerian rapper, opened up about his passion for football and his deep connection to Nigeria.
The artist, known professionally as Azeez Fashiola, revealed that he could have pursued a career in football, having played for prestigious English clubs like Arsenal Youth, Millwall, and Charlton during his upbringing in Peckham, England.
Despite his time in England, Naira Marley’s heart remained tied to his Nigerian heritage. Growing up, his father enforced a strict rule of speaking only Yoruba in their household, fostering a strong cultural bond.
This upbringing immersed him in Nigerian traditions, including listening to Fuji music, relishing African cuisine, and living in a community that felt like an extension of Lagos.
As Naira Marley returned to Nigeria, he found that his London roots were not widely known, allowing him to connect seamlessly with the vibrant Nigerian street music scene.
Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged that his upbringing in Peckham, akin to “small Lagos,” contributed to his smooth integration into Nigerian culture.
Had he chosen a different path, Naira Marley could have pursued a career as a footballer, showcasing his talents on the pitch. However, fate led him to become a prominent figure in the music industry, now leading the Marlian Music label.
From his football dreams to his strong Nigerian roots, Naira Marley’s story is one of cultural diversity and the pursuit of passion, making him an influential and beloved artist in both the music and football worlds.
