The 66th annual Grammy Awards accelerated towards ratings success on Sunday, drawing an average of 16.9 million viewers with a program featuring numerous high-profile performances and surprises.

This represents a significant 34% increase from last year’s show, which averaged 12.4 million viewers, making it the most-viewed Grammy ceremony since 2020. (These figures are derived from both Nielsen’s assessment of linear views on CBS and Paramount Global’s data on streams from Paramount+, CBS.com, and the CBS app.)

Reports suggest that this surge in viewership can be attributed in part to the notable presence of Nigerian artists nominated for Grammy awards. Many Nigerians tuned in to support their favorite artists, such as Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Ayra Starr, contributing to the heightened interest in the event.

Furthermore, Paramount+ witnessed its highest Grammy viewership ever, with a staggering 173% surge in streams compared to 2023.

The most-watched quarter-hour of the show, attracting 18.3 million viewers, commenced at 9:45 p.m. This segment featured poignant performances by Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Jon Batiste, and Fantasia Barrino, leading the In Memoriam tribute.

Among the evening’s standout moments were Tracy Chapman’s return to the public eye, accompanied by Luke Combs to perform her iconic hit “Fast Car”; Joni Mitchell’s historic debut performance at the Grammys; Celine Dion’s surprise appearance to present the Album of the Year award, marking her return to the stage following her revelation about battling Stiff Person Syndrome; and Taylor Swift’s announcement of her forthcoming album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Trevor Noah hosted the Grammys for the fourth consecutive year, with Fulwell 73 producing the show for the Recording Academy. Executive producers included Ben Winston, Raj Kapoor, and Jesse Collins.

NBCUniversal also celebrated triumphs on Sunday: “E! Grammys Live From the Red Carpet” garnered its highest viewership since 2017 with 1.5 million viewers. The pre-show “Live from E! Countdown to the Grammys” and the post-show “Live from E!: Grammys After Party” achieved their largest audiences since 2020.
