Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Norwegian playmaker Martin Ødegaard will continue as club captain for the 2025/26 season.
Speaking at his first pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Arteta revealed that the decision was reached unanimously by the squad following a voting process.
“Our captain? Everybody chose the same person, which was Martin Ødegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have,” Arteta said.
Ødegaard, who has worn the armband for the past two seasons, will be aiming to lead the Gunners to their first Premier League title in two decades. Arsenal have finished as runners-up in each of the last three campaigns.
Addressing the club’s ambitions for the season, Arteta compared their persistence to digging for gold.
“You keep digging, digging, digging and you have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. For three seasons we’ve had more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. That’s all about the consistency,” he added.
The Gunners will be hoping that this season’s campaign finally sees their hard work rewarded with silverware.
