‘The ball will miss you’ – Lionel Messi pays tribute to ‘phenomenon’ Andres Iniesta as ex-Barcelona team-mate calls time on illustrious career at 40
Lionel Messi has expressed heartfelt tributes to his former Barcelona teammate Andrés Iniesta as the legendary midfielder enters retirement at the age of 40.
Iniesta, known for his remarkable contributions to both club and country, announced his retirement on October 8 after a storied career that included winning the FIFA World Cup with Spain in 2010, where he scored the iconic extra-time goal in the final against the Netherlands and two European Championships.
Throughout his illustrious career, Iniesta made 674 appearances for Barcelona, winning nine La Liga titles and four Champions League titles. He transitioned to Japanese club Vissel Kobe in 2018 and recently played for Emirates Club in the UAE.
In a tribute shared on social media, Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, reflected on their time together, saying: “One of the teammates with the most magic and one of the ones I enjoyed playing together the most. Andrés Iniesta, the ball will miss you and so will we! I wish you the best, always. You are a phenomenon.”

Iniesta hinted at his retirement in a video, referencing his iconic shirt number, and fans had speculated about a potential reunion with Messi at Inter Miami, where several former Barcelona stars currently play. However, no deal was finalized, and Iniesta will now focus on his coaching career.
