Mercy Chinwo takes legal action over controversial allegations

Renowned Nigerian gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has initiated legal proceedings against social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as Verydarkman (VDM), over alleged defamation.
VDM had previously accused Chinwo of making “shady” remarks regarding her dispute with her former manager. In response, the singer has filed a lawsuit at the Abuja High Court, seeking ₦1.1 billion in damages.
A court document dated March 3, 2025, reveals that Chinwo, represented by her lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi, is also demanding a public apology from VDM. The suit further requires him to delete and retract all defamatory statements, with a mandatory court appearance within 14 days.
To substantiate her claims, Chinwo has reportedly provided documented evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to challenge VDM’s allegations.
Meanwhile, the social media activist has continued to assert bias in the legal process, alleging that the judge is a fan of Chinwo and that an EFCC official involved has connections to her husband.
As the lawsuit unfolds, public reactions have been mixed, with many keenly following the case’s developments.
