Scott McTominay reveals how David Beckham influenced his performance against Brentford.
Scott McTominay has revealed that watching the new Netflix documentary about David Beckham’s life and career served as inspiration for his impressive performance in Manchester United’s recent win over Brentford.
Manchester United initially seemed headed for their seventh defeat of the 2023/24 season when Mathias Jensen scored for Brentford after some defensive lapses at Old Trafford.
However, McTominay’s introduction in the 87th minute quickly turned the game around. The Scottish international scored a stunning 93rd-minute volleyed equalizer, displaying exceptional control before finding the bottom corner of the net. He then headed home the winning goal just four minutes later.
During his post-match press conference, McTominay shared an unexpected source of inspiration for his match-winning contribution, stating that he had watched the new three-part docuseries that delves into David Beckham’s career the night before the Brentford clash.
“I was watching David Beckham’s documentary last night, and things like that inspire you,” McTominay revealed.
He went on to mention that the docuseries highlighted Beckham’s 12-year tenure at Manchester United, both in the academy and senior ranks, which reminded him of the “real culture” of the club.
Scott McTominay, like David Beckham years earlier, came through the Manchester United youth academy, initially joining the club in 2002 while Beckham was still with the team.
Since breaking into the first team in 2016, McTominay has had varying degrees of prominence in the starting lineup depending on the manager in charge.
The midfielder was a favorite of former manager Jose Mourinho, who even took over the club’s end-of-season award ceremony in 2018 to present the ‘Jose Mourinho Player of the Season’ award to McTominay—an award that hasn’t been given out since.
While McTominay continued to be a key player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he saw a decrease in playing time due to the arrival of Erik ten Hag. Last season, he started in just 10 Premier League matches, scoring one league goal. However, his game-changing performance against Brentford could lead to more opportunities under the Dutch coach.
