‘I’m a different breed! GOD’s baby’ – Mr May D declares amid comparisons

Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has ignited discussions on social media after strongly cautioning fans against comparing him to Afrobeats superstar Wizkid.
The Ile Ijo hitmaker took to X (formerly Twitter) to assert his unique position in the Nigerian music industry, emphasizing that he is in a league of his own.
“Don’t ever compare me to anyone in this industry again!! Especially Wiz!! I’m a different breed!!! GOD’s baby,” May D wrote.
His statement quickly sparked debates among fans, with some questioning his stance while others supported his claim.
Amid the ongoing discussions, May D recalled a past incident where Wizkid performed his song “Too Fine” (a collaboration with Kel) while he was in the audience.
“I remember when I went to an event and Wizkid was performing my song with Kel, ‘Too Fine,’ and I was in the crowd. I still love him till date, but never compare,” he added.
May D rose to fame after signing with Square Records (P-Square’s former record label) in 2011. However, he parted ways with the label in August 2012, a move he believes had a major impact on his career.
His latest remarks have reignited conversations about his legacy in the music industry and his place among Afrobeats icons.
