I didn’t have a bank account while I was with Psquare – Singer May D
Nigerian music veteran May D has left fans stunned with a recent revelation about his financial struggles during his time with P-Square Records.
Speaking on ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, the “Soundtrack” singer disclosed that he did not have a bank account for the entire four years he was signed to the label.
May D explained that he never opened a bank account because all his bookings were managed by Jude Okoye, P-Squareโs elder brother and manager. “I didn’t have a bank account for the four years that I was with P-Square, but it’s not their fault because I was supposed to open one,” he clarified.
He noted that despite participating in endorsement deals and performances, the payments were always directed to Jude, which left him with little to no financial independence. “Even when we had endorsements, they’d have to call Jude first, and I lost all the endorsements,” May D recounted.
May D revealed that his fortunes began to change after he departed from the label. Following the announcement of his exit, his phone was flooded with booking requests.
“Let me tell you how I got my first TV,” he shared. “When it was put online that I was no longer a part of P-Square, my phone started blowing up like crazy. I got booked for a show in Ibadan for one million, then another at the Civic Center for 1.5 million, and another for one million.”
It wasnโt until these opportunities came in that May D finally opened his first bank account. “When I did open it, I wanted to eat and saw I had over 3 million. I was so shocked that I withdrew the money just to believe it,” he said.
Overwhelmed by his newfound financial independence, May D treated himself to his first television. “After I withdrew it, I went to ShopRite and bought a TV. It was my very first TV, and I was so shocked.”
