Mason Greenwood completes permanent Manchester United exit
Mason Greenwood is no longer a Manchester United player after completing a permanent transfer to Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille. The transfer, valued at around £25 million including add-ons, also includes a sell-on clause that could see Manchester United receive up to 50% of any future transfer fee.
Greenwood, 22, will wear the number 10 shirt for Marseille in the upcoming season. A statement from Manchester United read: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer. The 22-year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019. We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”
The transfer follows the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Marseille to Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah, after a prolific season with 30 goals in all competitions.

Greenwood’s move to Marseille has been controversial, drawing backlash even before the transfer was finalized. The mayor of Marseille had urged the club not to proceed with the deal.
Greenwood last played for Manchester United in January 2022, before his arrest on charges of assault, attempted rape, and coercive control. The charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew, significantly reducing the likelihood of a conviction. Following his legal issues, Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan at La Liga club Getafe.

Manchester United initially planned to reintegrate Greenwood into their first-team squad after conducting their own internal investigation. However, facing significant public backlash, the club reversed this decision, ultimately leading to his transfer to Marseille.
