Maphorisa advises Nigerian producers to slow down the Amapiano tempo
DJ Maphorisa, one of the pioneers of Amapiano, has sparked a discussion by urging Nigerian producers to lower the beats per minute (BPM) in their Amapiano tracks.
During a recent Instagram live session, Maphorisa, widely regarded as a key figure in shaping the genre, emphasized the importance of a slower tempo in defining the authentic Amapiano sound.
Despite Amapiano’s widespread popularity across Africa and beyond, various interpretations have emerged, with some Nigerian producers opting for faster tempos in their creations. Maphorisa’s remarks serve as a gentle reminder for them to stay true to the genre’s roots and preserve its original essence.
“Please…. play amapiano softer… you can’t be playing amapiano at 120 BPM” he explained. “They’ll be playing amapiano like they’re playing hip hop… play it at 113, 114, 115 BPM.”
