Dwight Yorke, a legend of Manchester United, has pinpointed the reason Liverpool are having trouble, and he feels that it is due to the squad’s ageing.

Since Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield, Liverpool has had its worst start to a season. After 11 games, the Reds are eighth in the table, 12 points behind league-leading Arsenal.

Performances have also been lacking, for the most part, a far cry from last season when the club made an unprecedented challenge for the quadruple.

While numerous explanations for Liverpool’s troubles have been offered, including the injury issue, important players being out of form, and the transfer of Sadio Mane, Klopp himself has already declared his team to be out of the title race this year.

Yorke has offered his own explanations, reasoning that Klopp’s team has become too stale and old in comparison to its rivals.

‘There’s new players and teams are working them out a little bit – the Premier League is a fierce competition and every team can pose problems for you,’ the former forward told Lord Ping.

‘Tactically, the level is so high in the league and I think managers have found ways to exploit some of the weaknesses in this Liverpool team.

‘The age of the squad is getting a bit older, and with the way that they play, relentless pressing, physically that will take a toll. They had an amazing five year period where you could guarantee they would challenge for everything, it looks like they might be coming to the end of that cycle as a squad.

‘Liverpool are also integrating new, younger players into the team and trying to remain consistent while doing that is really difficult. At the moment, they are struggling to find the momentum that they need to challenge.

‘This year Liverpool have lost that fear factor. Teams are not scared to play Liverpool anymore.’

The former Trinidad and Tobago star think Manchester City will win the title this year, but he also thinks Liverpool can improve.

‘Liverpool is not in the title conversation, but we’ve seen them do it before,’ he added.

‘We’ve seen them hunt down City and go on amazing runs, closing massive point gaps. I think you’re a very brave man to predict anything in the Premier League at this time of the year.’
