Manchester United match miserable club record after Newcastle defeat
Manchester United struggles reached historic lows in December 2024, marking their worst defensive month since records began. A 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday highlighted the ongoing crisis, as the Red Devils suffered their fourth consecutive loss in all competitions and their fifth defeat in six Premier League games.
Across nine fixtures in December, United conceded a staggering 18 goals, equaling their previous record set in March 1964. Manager Ruben Amorim admitted after the game that the team is now grappling with relegation concerns due to their poor form.
The Newcastle loss also compounded several unwanted records. It marked United’s third straight league defeat at Old Trafford, a streak not seen since 1979. Additionally, United failed to score in three consecutive losses for the first time in nine years.
Amorim, who was brought in to implement a 3-4-2-1 system similar to the one he successfully deployed at Sporting CP, is under mounting pressure.
Despite the team’s struggles, he initially resisted changing his approach, stating, “I was hired because of that idea, and in these difficult moments, if you change your mind, it is the end for any coach.”
However, after the Newcastle game, Amorim appeared to reconsider, suggesting he may adapt his tactics: “It is a choice that everyone has to make in football. If I think this is the best thing for the team, I will continue to pass my message.”
As Manchester United heads into the new year, the spotlight remains firmly on Amorim to find solutions and reverse the team’s alarming decline.
