Marcus Rashford of Manchester United has been selected for the 2022–23 UEFA Europa League team of the season.
Even though Rashford’s six goals in nine Europa League games were not enough to keep him in the starting lineup, the Red Devils were eliminated from the competition by eventual champion Sevilla in the quarterfinals. Undoubtedly, the forward’s most memorable performance in the tournament occurred when United defeated Barcelona at Camp Nou thanks to a goal he scored.
Of the eight contenders, two—ex-Manchester United defender Chris Smalling and midfielder Nemanja Matic—were selected for the team of the season. Both Smalling and Matic, who are currently teammates at AS Roma, made it to the final game but lost to Sevilla on penalties.
Teammates Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini join Matic and Smalling in the lineup, while Sevilla is represented by Bounou, Jesus Navas, Marcos Acuna, and Ivan Ratikic in the season-ending squad.
Sevilla won the competition in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020, making this their seventh victory in the final.
Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen and Victor Boniface of Union SG, who finished as the Europa League’s joint-leading scorer with Marcus Rashford, completed the top XI for the 2022–23 season.
