Real Madrid confirm Luka Modric as new captain in contract renewal
Luka Modric will continue his remarkable career at Real Madrid, having signed a one-year contract extension.
The 38-year-old Croatian midfielder was out of contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, leading to uncertainty about his future, especially after his teammate Toni Kroos decided to retire from all forms of football following Euro 2024.
Last season, Madrid secured a La Liga and Champions League double—Modric’s sixth Champions League title—though he played a more limited role under Carlo Ancelotti, who favored younger talents like Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Despite his reduced presence on the pitch, Modric will remain at the Bernabeu for another season. His contract, which was set to expire at the end of June, has been extended, ensuring his stay in Spain beyond his 39th birthday.

Modric’s playing time has decreased in recent seasons due to the rise of Camavinga, Tchouameni, Fede Valverde, and Jude Bellingham. He started only 18 games as Real Madrid clinched another La Liga title. Nevertheless, Modric seems content with his reduced role, recognizing Real Madrid’s successful strategy of acquiring and developing central midfielders, which keeps them competitive for trophies.
Real Madrid announced: “Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modrić have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who will be linked to the club until 30 June 2025.
“Modrić arrived at Real Madrid in 2012, and in his twelve seasons representing our shirt he has become a Real Madrid and world football legend.”
Modric aims to add more trophies to his collection next season, supported by the arrival of Kylian Mbappe. The French superstar has been unveiled at the Santiago Bernabeu after completing his long-anticipated transfer to the Spanish giants.
