Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British record transfer worth £125 million ($144m).

The Swedish forward has committed to a six-year deal at Anfield, bringing an end to one of the summer’s longest-running transfer sagas. Liverpool had identified Isak as their top attacking target but saw an initial £110m bid rejected, with Newcastle adamant that their talisman was not on the market.

Tensions grew as Isak distanced himself from the Magpies—he trained alone at former club Real Sociedad, skipped Newcastle’s first three Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Leeds, and even took to Instagram to accuse the club of making “broken” promises. Newcastle responded firmly, denying any prior agreement that he could leave.

The breakthrough came after Newcastle secured Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade for £69m, softening their stance and reopening negotiations with Liverpool. The result is a record-breaking transfer that eclipses Chelsea’s £106m capture of Enzo Fernández from Benfica in January 2023.

Speaking after sealing his move, Isak—set to wear the No.9 jersey—told Liverpool’s website:

“I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here, but I’m super-happy to be part of this team, this club, and everything it represents. I’m proud and really looking forward to what’s ahead. I can’t wait to meet my teammates, the fans, and get back on the pitch.”

Isak’s career began at AIK in Sweden before he moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2016. After a loan spell at Willem II, he joined Real Sociedad in 2019, where he enjoyed four productive years, scoring 44 times in 132 matches and winning the 2019-20 Copa del Rey. His move to Newcastle in 2022 for £63m saw him continue his rise, netting 62 goals in 109 appearances, including the decisive strike in the club’s 2025 Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool—Newcastle’s first major trophy since 1955.

The 25-year-old could make his debut for Arne Slot’s side after the international break, when Liverpool travel to Burnley on September 14. The Reds have made a flawless start to the new Premier League campaign, winning against Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Arsenal.
