Ladipoe reflects on early struggles, industry doubts, and eventual success
Nigerian Hip Hop sensation Ladipoe, signed to Mavin Records, has revealed the challenges he faced in his early days as a musician. In a recent interview, he shared how industry insiders doubted his potential for success in Nigeria due to his unique style.
Ladipoe recalled being told to pursue a music career elsewhere, as his style wouldn’t appeal to Nigerian audiences. “I was told that because of my style, no one would ever listen to my songs here in Nigeria and that I should try elsewhere in the world,” he said.
Despite the skepticism, Ladipoe chose to stay and follow his passion, a decision that has paid off significantly. His songs have surpassed his expectations, proving his critics wrong. “All my songs have exceeded my expectations,” he said with pride.
However, Ladipoe admitted that he’s not entirely satisfied with his achievements, citing the elusive nature of satisfaction in creative pursuits. “It is human nature for satisfaction to be elusive. I feel this applies twice as much to creative people, such as artistes like myself. I am grateful but not satisfied,” he said.
Ladipoe also shared a humbling experience from his early career, where he received a lukewarm response from the crowd and a mistake by his band. “I remember once, early in my career, I came on stage with so much energy and shouted into the microphone, ‘Who is ready for some more hip-hop’?. The overwhelming response from the crowd was, ‘no’. I remember being so deflated.” He now looks back on that moment and laughs, grateful for his growth.
