Jurgen Klopp reveals worrying extent of Andrew Robertson’s shoulder injury.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that left-back Andrew Robertson will need to undergo surgery for an injured shoulder, and he will be sidelined “for a while.”
Robertson sustained a shoulder dislocation during a collision with goalkeeper Unai Simon while playing for Scotland in their 2-0 defeat to Spain during Euro 2024 last Thursday.
Upon his return to England, Robertson was evaluated by Liverpool’s medical team to determine whether surgical intervention was necessary.
While allowing the injury to heal naturally might have resulted in a return within a month, it would have carried a higher risk of recurrence. As a result, Klopp has announced that the 29-year-old will undergo surgery to ensure a more stable and lasting recovery.
Jurgen Klopp, revealed in a press conference ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton that surgery appears to be the best course of action for Andrew Robertson’s shoulder injury. Klopp acknowledged that this approach is geared toward long-term recovery, but it means that Robertson will be sidelined for an extended period.
Klopp added, “In my experience, you can train pretty quickly again but not football-specific so because you have to be careful of challenges and all these kind of things.”
Typically, surgery for this type of shoulder injury results in a recovery period of around three months, which suggests that Robertson may not return to action for Liverpool until 2024.
In Robertson’s absence, Klopp is likely to rely on Kostas Tsimikas, the deputy left-back, who recently signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool.
Tsimikas has been featured in Liverpool’s Europa League group games and the Carabao Cup win over Leicester but has seen limited Premier League action.
Robertson, on the other hand, had started all eight of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season and notably scored while captaining the team in a 3-1 comeback victory against Wolves.
