“Joromi’ was a deadline song” – Simi reveals mixed feelings about her hit song

Afrobeats sensation Simi recently shared her mixed feelings about her 2017 hit song “Joromi,” offering insights into its origin and her creative process.

Surprisingly, Simi admitted that she wasn’t initially fond of “Joromi,” a track from her self-titled album “Simisola.” In a recent interview with CNN, she revealed that she felt somewhat irritated when tasked with writing the song due to a looming deadline.

During the interview, which surfaced online on Saturday, April 20, 2024, Simi candidly confessed her initial reluctance towards “Joromi.” Despite her reservations, she acknowledged that the pressure of the deadline pushed her to craft the song, which eventually became a chart-topping hit.

“Sometimes I don’t have any inspiration but I have a deadline. I don’t really like those because you know you have to force it to come. And I’m not crazy about those,” Simi told CNN. “I’ve made like really great songs from those. Joromi was one of those.”

The singer elaborated that she had already finished writing songs for her album when she was presented with the beat for “Joromi.” Initially hesitant, she tried out various song ideas on the beat before ultimately creating “Joromi,” a track that exceeded her initial reservations and surpassed her expectations.

“Joromi was a deadline song. I was even done. They sent me a beat and I was like I’m done writing,” Simi recalled. “I wrote like five different songs on that beat that I didn’t like and then ‘Joromi’ came but it was like a deadline song.”

Despite her initial irritation, Simi expressed gratitude for composing “Joromi,” recognizing its success and its significant impact on her career trajectory. The music video for “Joromi” has garnered over 19 million views on YouTube, solidifying its position as a beloved favorite among fans.

“I didn’t even want to write the song. I was just irritated. But I’m glad that I did,” Simi confessed.

Simi’s candid revelations provide fans with a peek into the creative process behind her music and the unexpected journey of “Joromi” from a project driven by deadlines to a chart-topping hit. Her honesty sheds light on the complexities of the artistic journey, showcasing how initial reluctance can sometimes lead to remarkable success.
