There’s still a stigma around using songwriters in Nigeria – Joeboy
-
Joeboy talks about the reluctance to use songwriters among Nigerian artists.
In an interview with Beat FM, Joeboy delved into the topic of the reluctance among Nigerian artists to collaborate with multiple songwriters on a song, similar to common practices in the West. Host Osi Suave raised the issue, noting a prevailing belief among artists that such collaborations could jeopardize their credibility in the eyes of consumers.
Joeboy acknowledged that while the stigma surrounding the use of songwriters is diminishing in Nigeria, there are still consumers who ridicule artists for engaging songwriting services. He emphasized that, contrary to popular belief, interpreting a song penned by others requires considerable talent.
Having previously worked with songwriters, notably Kamena, whom he featured on his sophomore album ‘Body & Soul’, Joeboy expressed his support for the practice. Additionally, he clarified that there’s mutual respect between him and Mr. Eazi after his departure from Empawa, where he had been signed since 2019. Joeboy announced the establishment of his label Young Legend and a collaboration with international label Warner Music.
