Joeboy explains why people should not take every advice they’re given

Nigerian singer Joeboy has shared a personal experience that highlights the importance of being cautious when taking advice.
In a recent interview, the Afropop star recounted how he was initially discouraged from releasing his hit song ‘Sip‘ because it didn’t fit the typical sound his fans were used to.
“There was a time I called the person who handles my ESP stuff and told him I wanted to change my song. He asked if I was sure, and I said yes. I then played a couple of songs, and they told me it wasn’t a club banger or high tempo. They asked, ‘Are you sure this is where you wanna go? It’s not a love song, and you know people love you for your love songs.’”
Despite the doubts from hiteam, Joeboyoy chose to follow his instincts and release the sonanyway—a decision that paid off beyond his expectations.
“I decided to do it whether it worked or not. It worked way beyond my expectations, and Sip became one of my biggest songs.”
Reflecting on the experience, Joeboy emphasized that while advice can be valuable, it often comes from personal perspectives that may not align with one’s vision.
“This is why you shouldn’t take every piece of advice. Sometimes, people only see things from their own perspective. It doesn’t mean they wish you bad; it’s just their understanding. If you stand here, you see 9, and if you stand there, you see 6.”
Joeboy’s experience serves as a reminder for creatives to trust their instincts and take risks, even when others don’t immediately see the vision.
