Joeboy, Johnny Drille comments on the launch of the new Naira notes
Nigerian artists, Joeboy and Johnny Drille have respectively reacted to the new Naira notes that were recently unveiled.
The redesigned naira notes in the denominations of N200, N500, and N1,000 were unveiled by the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), on Wednesday morning.
Buhari unveiled the notes in the State House Council Chambers just before the start of this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting.
Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, responded to queries from reporters after the event and claimed that nobody was the target of the action.
Instead, he claimed that the updated notes would grant the central bank complete control over the amount of money in circulation.
“This move is to enable the Central Bank of Nigeria have control over the size of money in circulation
“There is no need to think that the programme is targeted at anyone. During my speech at the unveiling, I said that plans for this started early in the year. We considered the pros and cons carefully.
“In the past, attempts to redesign and reissue currencies have been resisted. Only a President of Muhammadu Buhari’s character could have made it happen,” he said.

The CBN governor also argued that Nigerians have ample time to return the old notes in circulation adding that the apex bank will not extend the January 31, 2023 deadline.
Emefiele said the apex bank will now redesign the currency after every five to eight years, as empowered by the constitution.
However, Nigerians don’t seem impressed with the new designs as they commented that they looked just like the old notes only with a different colour.
Artists like Joeboy and Johnny Drille also expressed their thoughts on the new designs.
Joebboy quoting the announcement of the Naira redesign launch, wrote;
“Wowww so creative ????”
While Johnny Drille wrote;
“These new notes are uglier”
