Darwin Nunez frustration revealed by Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool forward’s match-winning display at Newcastle.
Jurgen Klopp admitted that his two-goal hero Darwin Nunez was disappointed that he did not start Liverpool’s triumph over Newcastle on Sunday.
10-man Liverpool stunned Newcastle with a 2-1 comeback win thanks to a late Darwin Nunez brace. The Uruguayan striker came off the bench to help his team with an equalizer and a 93rd-minute victory. After the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confessed that the £64 million man was dissatisfied with his role as a substitute.
“I understand the question, it’s clear he’s not happy,” Klopp said when asked about Nunez starting all three of Liverpool’s opening league games on the bench. “He will play, there’s no doubt about that. We need everyone. We need to find a way of playing. This is a new team with new key players. It needs time. He scores two goals and can’t get the smile off his face. For the team, it was super important. You need these things together. You cannot force it.”
Liverpool fell behind in the 25th minute to Anthony Gordon’s goal and had to play with 10 men for nearly an hour when Virgil van Dijk was sent out for a tackle on Alexander Isak. Klopp went on to call Nunez, who scored twice, “super” and said he was “fired up” when he came on late in the second half.
Since his big-money move from Benfica last summer, the 24-year-old has been unable to win over Liverpool fans.
He’ll be hoping that the confidence he displayed in scoring his two goals will earn him a place in Klopp’s starting XI against Aston Villa next weekend.
