Ruger & BNXN describe their joint project as ‘synergy at its finest’
During an interview on Apple Music Africa Now Radio, BNXN and Ruger discussed their highly anticipated collaborative EP, which they described as embodying the true essence of collaboration.
Titled ‘RnB‘, the joint project was officially released on April 18, following the pre-release excitement generated by two singles, ‘Romeo Must Die‘ and ‘POE‘.
In the conversation with Nandi Madiba, BNXN emphasized that the ‘RnB‘ EP showcased synergy at its peak, highlighting the seamless blend of their talents and creative energies.
“It shows quality, it shows the real essence of collaboration – how to bounce off each other, how to learn from each other, how to pick this and flow off what this person [did]. It’s like a relay race,” BNXN said on the 7-track project, which serves as a celebration of the truce between both artists after nearly 2 years of rift.
BNXN expressed his pride in the collaborative effort that resulted in the ‘RnB‘ EP, emphasizing that it is a project he holds in high regard. Additionally, he hinted at the possibility of future collaborations between himself and Ruger, directing attention specifically to the last track on the EP.
“…I am beyond proud of this project. It’s why the last song we said “Not Done,” because hopefully we’re not done.”
Ruger shared his perspective on the project, expressing his enjoyment of collaborating with BNXN. He highlighted their shared approach to music-making, emphasizing that they both create music that goes beyond surface-level themes. Ruger specifically noted the depth of their lyrics, suggesting that Nigerian listeners should appreciate this aspect of their music, as it is highly valued internationally.
“You know most Afrobeats artists, they’re always about gyration, enjoyment – let’s make songs people will party to, let’s talk about enjoyment and money and that. We’re talking about everything! Go back to our projects, we talk about everything, we talk about relationships. Most artists in Naija don’t talk about relationships like that, they talk about ‘your body’s banging, you’re fine, you’re this’ but we’re saying the deeper things. As much as the whole world is appreciating that part, I think Nigerians have to actually appreciate that about us, because when we go outside the country that’s what they love about us. “That guy is speaking to me!”
Ruger’s departure from D Prince’s Jonzing World marks a significant transition in his career, and the ‘RnB’ EP represents his debut project under his new imprint, Blownboy Entertainment. This move signifies Ruger’s evolution as an artist and his commitment to forging his own path in the music industry. With ‘RnB’, Ruger aims to showcase his artistic vision and creative independence, laying the foundation for a promising future under his new label.
