“It is not about popularity or streaming” – Grammy CEO reveals how winners are selected (Video)

In a video that has gone viral, Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, which is in charge of the prestigious Grammy Award, reveals the selection process for winners.

On Sunday, February 4, 2024, the 66th Grammy Awards were hosted at Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles, California, in the United States.

It was a disappointing experience for Nigerians, though, as none of the nominees—Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide, Asake, Ayra Starr, and Tems—who were from the nation—won any prizes.

The CEO of the Grammy Awards discusses the process of choosing winners in an interview that has gone viral on the internet.

He asserts that the academy members’ votes are the only means by which artists can win at the Grammy Awards.

He went on to say that you have to be a professional in the music industry from the United States to become a member of the Recording Academy.

In his words; “You have to understand that the only way to win is to have the membership of the academy vote for you, to be a member of the academy , you have to be a professional working in music in the United States for now.

He continued by saying that the members will listen to the music provided by eligible artists for the year and assess the caliber of the artwork.

The CEO stated that there will be no journalism, community, or music label involvement and that the members of the Recording Academy will not be monitoring sales, streams, fans, or follows.

Noting that there isn’t a superior song or rap, he concluded that it is subjective because it is dependent on the opinions of the Recording Academy members who cast their votes.
