Nigerian rapper and award-winning artist Ice Prince has opened up about the significant challenges he faced during his early years, revealing how financial hardship shaped his path to success.

Speaking candidly in a recent interview on the Listen with Osi podcast, the rap star shared the pivotal moments of his life, including losing both parents at a young age and his inability to afford higher education.

Reflecting on his life journey, Ice Prince described the profound impact of growing up without parental support. “I don’t have a mother, I’m an only son, and that’s quite tough. I’ve been that way since I was 11 years old when I lost my dad.

I was 21 or 22 when my mum passed away, and I have a family that depends on me. I don’t have any uncles, aunties, Godfathers, or Godmothers that I can depend on. It’s been nothing but God in my life,” he said.

The rapper also recalled how financial difficulties during his school days limited his education. He explained how the inability to pay ₦20,000 for registration fees cost him a chance at university admission. “I was the guy who would spend at least three weeks out of every school term at home because of school fees.

I didn’t go to university because of ₦20,000, which is like one spliff now. That’s the reason I didn’t go. I had two weeks to pay that money for registration, and I couldn’t come up with it. That’s how I lost the admission, and I became a studio rat from there,” he shared.

When asked how he wants to be remembered, Ice Prince said: “I want people to remember me as that guy who came out of nothing and became something, and look at my life story and be like, ‘if this idiot can make it, then I don’t have any excuse to fail.’”

“I didn’t go to the University because of 20,000 Naira.”
