“I Thought I Was Going to Die Broke”: Spyro Opens Up on Overcoming Fear and Finding Faith

For Nigerian singer Oludipe David, better known as Spyro, success didn’t come wrapped in comfort or confidence; it was a long, painful wrestle with fear.
In a heartfelt chat with veteran broadcaster Frank Edoho, the Who Is Your Guy crooner opened up about his deep-seated fear of failure and how his father’s harsh words once shaped his childhood self-image.
According to Spyro, growing up was tough. His father, though strict and well-meaning, often used negative words while correcting him, words that left scars far deeper than he realized at the time.
“I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure,” Spyro confessed.
Those words, he said, became a silent echo in his mind, making him internalize the idea that he wasn’t good enough. The result was years of self-doubt, from struggling with poor grades in secondary school to questioning if he could ever finish his university degree.
“I used to feel like maybe I wasn’t meant to succeed,” he admitted, describing how atychiphobia the fear of failure followed him into adulthood.

But Spyro’s story took a turn when he found faith. He said developing a personal relationship with God became the anchor that steadied his mind and helped him unlearn the fear that had once controlled his life.
Before his big break, Spyro revealed that he was already on the verge of quitting music altogether. With no sign of progress, he turned to interior design to make ends meet until destiny intervened.
Then came 2022, and with it, the life-changing success of Who Is Your Guy. The viral hit not only catapulted him to fame but also reminded him that his story was far from over.
The following year, the remix featuring Tiwa Savage became a continental anthem, winning Best Collaboration at the 16th Headies Awards, a moment Spyro now sees as divine redemption.
Looking back, the singer says his journey has taught him that faith, not fear, defines one’s future.
From a boy once called a failure to a man inspiring millions, Spyro’s story is a quiet reminder that belief can heal what doubt once broke.
