Spyro clarifies his stance on being a secular-artist
Spyro, who soared to commercial success with his hit single ‘Who Is Your Guy,’ is making it clear that he identifies as a secular artist and has never claimed that his music will glorify God.
Despite gaining widespread recognition in the Afrobeats scene, Spyro has consistently emphasized that he is a practicing Christian with the intention of making a positive impact in the music industry for God.
In 2023, after winning Collaboration of the Year at the Headies, he shared on his Instagram story his desire to influence the industry for God by creating evergreen music, stating, “I am God’s ambassador here, and gradually we will take these grounds for him.”
While Spyro’s vocal commitment to his Christian faith has led some listeners to categorize him as a gospel artist, he clarified in a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria that he is not a gospel artist and never asserted that his music is intended to glorify God.
Spyro expressed his love for God but emphasized that he doesn’t want to be confined to the label of a gospel artist. He believes that music is a form of expression, and he wants the freedom to explore various subjects.
Spyro highlighted that if he aimed to create music solely to glorify God, he would make gospel music. However, he is focused on producing decent music that reflects his Christian faith.
Whether addressing social issues in ‘Billing,’ celebrating friendship in ‘Who Is Your Guy,’ or expressing love in ‘Only Fine Girl,’ Spyro values his ability to create music that communicates a range of messages while remaining true to his Christian beliefs.
