After the unfortunate death of a fan in the bleachers at Los Carmenes, Granada and Athletic Club decided to postpone their La Liga match on Sunday.

According to Reuters, the game was called off after 17 minutes, with Athletic Club leading 1-0 courtesy of an Inaki Williams goal, when a supporter had a heart attack in the bleachers. An hour later, the death of the supporter was verified, and both sides agreed to suspend the game.

Both Granada and Athletic Club issued comments announcing the game’s suspension and expressing condolences to the family of the deceased supporter.

    • “From the Entity we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends, as well as to the entire Granada family,” read the statement from the home side. “The match between Granada CF and Athletic Club, suspended after the death of a subscriber of our Club.”

Athletic Club added via their official social media accounts: “La Liga and the two clubs have agreed to call off the match due to the death of a fan at Los Cármenes. Athletic Club expresses its deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with the person’s family and loved ones.”

La Liga has confirmed the match will be rescheduled, with an official date to follow as both clubs take some time to come to terms with the tragic events at Los Carmenes. “Granada CF vs. Athletic Club de Bilbao has been suspended following the tragic death of a fan at the Estadio Nuevo los Cármenes,” the Spanish top-flight said. “Our condolences go out to their family and friends, as well as to all Granada CF fans. A rescheduled date and time for the match will be announced in the near future.”

Reigning La Liga champions Barcelona are among the clubs to have responded to the news at Granada. They said in a statement: “FC Barcelona expresses its deepest condolences to the loved ones of the fan who passed away during the game between Granada and Athletic Club. Rest in peace.”

Granada will return to La Liga play on December 16 against Celta Vigo. Meanwhile, Athletic Club will host Atletico Madrid on the same day.
