Chelsea football head coach Graham Potter has explained why he has chosen to use Raheem Sterling to play as a wingback.
At Chelsea, it’s starting to seem a little bit routine when new managers take over and make significant choices to move players to new positions that cause controversy.
Recall, Thomas Tuchel did it on his very first game as Blues boss, he moved Callum Hudson-Odoi from winger to wingback. And now, early in his tenure at Chelsea, new manager Graham Potter has made a similar move with Raheem Sterling, a choice that has already drawn criticism and questions.

Although I don’t believe Sterling has performed particularly poorly in his role as a wingback, it does go hand in hand with the fact that his strong early form, and in particular, his form in front of goal, has gone off in the last few games. As a result, concerns will unavoidably be asked.
Potter has explained why he uses Sterling as a wingback, and the fact is, it’s down to his flexibility and a lack of availability.
As reported by The Evening Standard, Potter said: “He’s [Sterling] got the flexibility, ability and quality to play in several positions. It’s not straightforward with losing the players we have [to injury].
“So you’re constantly trying to find the right balance, and find the right solutions. But he can help us in a number of positions.”
