Getafe sporting director explains Greenwood’s signing
Getafe sporting director, Ruben Reyes, has elaborated on the club’s rationale for acquiring Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United.
In August, Manchester United disclosed that Greenwood would be departing Old Trafford, concluding a six-month internal inquiry. The player had faced suspension in January following an arrest. Subsequently, he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm in October 2022. The Crown Prosecution Service chose to terminate criminal proceedings against him due to a combination of key witnesses withdrawing and the emergence of new evidence, rendering a conviction no longer feasible.
Following United’s announcement of Greenwood’s departure, several clubs, including Lazio and Besiktas, expressed interest in the player. However, Greenwood ultimately signed with La Liga’s Getafe on the transfer deadline day and was introduced to the supporters on Tuesday.
During a press event, Reyes fielded inquiries from journalists regarding the club’s decision to bring Greenwood on board. He remarked, “He has been adjudicated by the relevant authority, which is a judge. That represents the highest level of authority, doesn’t it?”
However, it’s worth noting that Greenwood’s case never proceeded to court, as the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the legal proceedings.
Reyes continued: “We, as I always say, have only signed players with the possibility of being signed. Both Mason, [Diego] Rico, and Oscar [Rodriguez] we consider that they were good signings for Getafe to complete our squad. A squad with players you know, who have our DNA and who are the house brand for this club to be maintained every year. It is very important. Being able to add these pieces for these colleagues who have given performance in recent years is a joy for us.”
The exact timing of Mason Greenwood’s debut for Getafe remains uncertain. He has not participated in competitive matches since January 2022.
