Will La Liga be Mason Greenwood’s new permanent home? Getafe president reveals transfer stance on Man Utd outcast after his impressive start to life on loan at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
Mason Greenwood is on a loan from Manchester United, and Getafe president Angel Torres has stated the club’s position on a permanent deal.
Following a six-month inquiry into Greenwood’s behavior off the field, United decided to cut ties with him on August 21. After that, the English attacker signed a one-year loan with Getafe. In his first 13 games, he has contributed seven goals, and the La Liga team is hoping he stays beyond the 2023–24 season.
The final agreement that saw Greenwood join Getafe on transfer deadline day in September did not contain a buy-option, but Torres has stated that they want to attempt to acquire him outright the following summer.
The Getafe president told Cadena SER: “With Greenwood, we are not only planning on him staying another year, but we also want to buy him.”
Although Greenwood’s contract with United expires in 2025, it has been stated that the Premier League’s biggest clubs would not take into account bringing him back into the starting lineup when his loan at Getafe ends.
Next year, though, the Madrid-based team may have fierce competition for the 22-year-old’s signing as Real Sociedad and Valencia, two La Liga rivals, will be closely monitoring his development. Lazio, the dominant team in Serie A, has reportedly expressed interest in Greenwood as well.
When Getafe returns to La Liga play on Saturday, traveling to Sevilla, Greenwood will be hoping to score once again. Despite their lack of road victories and current ninth-place ranking in La Liga, Jose Bordalas’ team is nine points ahead of Sevilla, who have been forced into a relegation battle following a wild start to the season.
