Fireboy DML discusses the rationale behind the song “Ashawo”
Nigerian singer, Fireboy DML recently released his album Playboy, and one song, in particular, is generating quite a stir, Ashawo.
The YBNL Signee recently released his third studio album, “Playboy,” a 14-track effort that boasts guest performances from Ed Sheeran, Chris Brown, Rema, Euro, Asake, and Shenseea, and it has already received positive feedback from fans.
“Ashawo” which is the third track on the project attracted some attention over the title and its lyrics.
In the chorus of the song, Fireboy sings;
“No be my fault oh, na shayo (no be my fault oh, na shayo)
Na all of us be ashawo (na all of us be ashawo)
If I cheat on you, I’m sorry (If I cheat on you, I’m sorry)
And, if you cheat on me, no worry (and, if you cheat on me, no worry)”
Fireboy DML is now talking more about the song, and in a new interview with Apple Music, he opened up about what inspired the song, what the song is about, and who the song is about.

Speaking about the song “Ashawo” with Apple Music, Fireboy DML said about it:
“Basically, it’s not an excuse for men to cheat, but it’s also the realistic point of view explaining why men in Lagos or people in general, people in relationships, cheat on their partners.
It’s just me saying, ‘It’s not my fault. It was the alcohol.’ I think it’s just something that I know that a lot of men in Lagos are going to relate to because the dating scene in Lagos, at the moment, is a big mess.
Everyone has gone crazy. I think COVID kind of really messed everyone up. So, it’s the perfect song for the perfect Lagos or Nigerian young couple. Like, I’d say, the realistic way to look at things. I’m singing this song purely out of the mindset of an honest young man who’s really true to himself.”
