“Tattoos Broke My Dad’s Heart” — Fireboy DML Gets Candid About Family Tensions and Self-Expression

Nigerian Afrobeats star Fireboy DML is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve through music—but now, he’s revealing how the ink on his skin has caused heartbreak offstage.
In a candid conversation on the 90s Baby Show, the Peru crooner (real name Adedamola Adefolahan) opened up about the emotional strain his tattoos have placed on his relationship with his father.
Despite the success and fame, Fireboy shared that his father remains deeply affected by his decision to get inked.
“One thing that I would do that can break my dad’s heart? I think I already did—my tattoos,” he confessed. “Whenever he comes to visit, I make sure I’m wearing a jalabiya, fully covered. Because tattoos, they break his heart every time he sees them.”
While his father seems unbothered by piercings, the sight of tattoos evokes a much deeper emotional reaction—one that Fireboy says may never fully heal. Yet, for the singer, body art is not a rebellious act but a personal expression.
“Even if I ended up as a banker, I would still have tattoos,” he explained. “It’s not even about being a musician for me. I see tattoos as a form of art. Sometimes, I want to be shirtless and still look dressed. That’s the presence they give me.”
This honest revelation adds another layer to the introspective artist who has consistently blurred the lines between vulnerability and artistry.
Known for songs that reflect love, identity, and personal growth, Fireboy’s openness about family dynamics and generational expectations strikes a chord with many young Africans navigating similar paths.
“My Dad will never forgive me for these tattoos.”
