Fireboy DML claims Nigerian music doesn’t have structure

Adedamola Adefolahan, popularly known as Fireboy DML, has shed light on why Nigerian artists often choose not to tour their own country despite achieving success on the global stage.

The singer highlighted that while Nigerian music is undeniably “perfect,” the absence of a robust infrastructure and organized structure poses challenges for touring within the country.

In a recent interview on Cool FM Nigeria in Lagos, hosted by Kayode Oladotun, also known as Do2dtun, Fireboy DML expressed the difficulties artists face in organizing tours within Nigeria due to the lack of a well-established framework.

This insight reflects the need for a more structured and conducive environment for artists to navigate the complexities of touring within their home country.

Fireboy said, “Everyone is saying ‘Afrobeats to the world.’ The music is perfect. But there is no structure.

“The [foreign] fans are listening [to our music] but when are they going to come to Lagos and watch us perform? When are we going to have arenas in Lagos where we can bring people from all around the world? You know, it [structure] will make everything just easier.”

Asked if he thinks Nigerian fans can afford to pay for arena shows, he said, “Yeah, they will. We already are.

“We just need to give people the incentive to pay. If you build a proper arena in Lagos, people would want to pay [gatefees] because they know that they are safe.”
