Chelsea have completed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United in a deal worth £40 million, ending weeks of speculation over the winger’s future.
The 21-year-old Argentina international, who was told at the close of last season by new United boss Ruben Amorim that he was free to find another club, becomes the most expensive academy graduate sale in the club’s history.
United initially rejected Chelsea’s opening bid of £25m, but the final agreement includes a 10% sell-on clause, making Garnacho’s departure the fourth-largest sale in United’s history—behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku, and Ángel Di María.
For Chelsea, the transfer continues their heavy investment under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Since their takeover in 2022, the Blues have spent over £500m on wide players alone, rising beyond £650m when strikers are factored in. Despite this, strong outgoing business means the club are on course to balance their books this summer.

Christopher Nkunku is set to leave Stamford Bridge for AC Milan in a £32m move, which will push Chelsea’s income from player sales this summer to more than £263m, a new Premier League record. Their previous highest, £215.9m, was set just two years ago.
For United, Garnacho’s exit helps ease Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR) pressures following a £200m outlay on new attackers Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.
The winger, who joined United’s youth system from Atlético Madrid at 16, made his final appearance for the club in May’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham—after which he openly questioned Amorim’s choice to leave him out of the starting XI.
