Erling Haaland equals Drogba’s Champions League record
Erling Haaland of Manchester City has matched Didier Drogba’s UEFA Champions League goalscoring record with his latest achievement.
In a dominant 5-0 victory against Sparta Prague, Haaland scored two goals, bringing his total to 44 Champions League goals.
His first goal, a stunning back-heeled volley, showcased his skill and silenced critics who questioned his fitness in recent matches.
This performance has propelled him past notable players like Neymar and Alessandro Del Piero in the all-time rankings.
Despite this impressive milestone, Haaland still has a significant way to go to catch up to Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the record with 141 goals in the competition.
Only two players have surpassed the 100 goal mark: Ronaldo with 141 and Lionel Messi with 129.
Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski is close behind with 97 goals, having scored in Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Bayern Munich.
After the match, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised Haaland for his remarkable goal, emphasizing his crucial role in the team’s success.
He stated, “It’s unbelievable the talent this guy has. When Erling gets in behind, he is unstoppable. Erling has this incredible capacity. He can touch the ball 15 times but have seven or eight chances. Today he scored two goals and could have scored two more. Erling has this incredible capacity.
He can touch the ball 15 times but have seven or eight chances. He made a fantastic goal but scored similar goal against Dortmund a couple of years ago with an incredible pass from Joao Cancelo. I didn’t know how it was scored. There was a player in front of me. Yeah, against Dortmund it was quite similar. For a human being, it’s not normal. I don’t know which one is more difficult. For me, both!”
