Mixed emotions for Emtee as wife withdraws GBV charges
Rapper Emtee, whose true name is Mthembeni Ndevu, is now a free man after his wife Nicole Kendall Chinsamy dropped the case against him for gender-based violence (GBV).
Emtee’s wife accepts his apology, saying, “There will always be this cloud hanging over his head that he is a woman basher.”
According to news the Grammy-winning rapper showed up at the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on May 2 and was given the all-clear to leave because his wife had already shown her forgiveness.
Nicole claimed in a statement that she forgave the singer for the benefit of their two children, Avery and Logan, as well as their unborn child.
Emtee has mixed feelings about the withdrawal, according to his attorney Dumisani Motsamai, even though they are happy about it because he was denied the chance to show his innocence in court.
“There will always be this cloud hanging over his head that he is a woman basher regardless of the charges being withdrawn. He will forever carry this image in the court of public opinion. The withdrawal of the charges by the complainant is therefore met with mixed emotions by the accused,” his lawyer wrote in a statement to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The team representing the Corner Store rapper reportedly denied the NPA’s demand for anger management sessions. Although a diversion programme is not a punishment, according to his attorney, it is a type of rehabilitation for previous offenders, and his client does not fit that description.
“It is an intervention that is typically offered as an alternative sentence to accused people whom the court believes ought to be afforded an opportunity to be corrected and thereafter be reintegrated back into society,” Motsamai wrote.
